Bitter AF: Herbal Bitters and Alcohol-Free Mixology

Looking to do something fun Sunday with no hangover? Look no further! Come join us as we take you on a journey on how and why are bitters used in cocktails. Learn how to create them from local plants and how to use them in your own signature alcohol-free craft cocktail! Join Little Red Bird Botanicals and Lyly’s Kitchen for Bitters and Alcohol-Free Mixology 101, where we’ll spend a creative afternoon learning, brewing, mixing, and mingling.
First, herbalist and botanist Holly Poole-Kavana (Little Red Bird Botanicals) will teach about the history of bitters, why we use them, and how to make bitters from plants that grow in the DC region. We’ll taste a selection of simple (single plant) bitters and discuss the actions each of them has in the body.
In the second half of the class, Rosemary Taing, owner of Lyly’s Test Kitchen (https://www.facebook.com/lylypadskitchen/) and passionate Alcohol-Free (AF) mixologist, will cover the art of crafting cocktails. Using the bitters covered in the first portion, we’ll learn how to garnish, shake/stir four cocktails– and the afternoon will end with some friendly competition! You’ll leave with a sample of blended bitters and cocktail creatures of your making.
Please note: some of the bitters used will add trace amounts of alcohol to our cocktails (equivalent to a couple drops of vodka). If you prefer to avoid this please let us know in advance!
Supplies are included. On-street parking is available and the center is easily accessible by public transportation.
